red and blue are the same from what I can remember. in the beginning you can choose bulbasaur, charmander, or squirtle. in yellow, you get pikachu no matter what and he follows you around as well as having different attitudes towards you as you progress through the game. it basically follows the tv show exactly. like, team rocket bursts in all the time and you kick their butt. also, something many people don't notice, but blue has a blue colored display, and red is red colored

Blue and Red are the same except for the available Pokemon in the world. However, Yellow makes you to start with Pikachu and Pikachu actually follows you around outside of it's Pokeball. And Yellow is slightly better in graphics.

I'd choose Red as my favorite, only because I never played the others much.

Red: Featured a slightly different set up in avialable pokemon throughout the game, which were exclusive to this version.

Blue: Same as above.

Green: The alternative title to "Blue" in Japan, it was exactly the same game, with a different colored casing, of course.

Yellow- Released in response to the critical reaction to the game and t.v. show's most popular pokemon, Pikachu, the game abandoned having 3 starters available for the main character, and instead provided Pikachu as the default, while the rival character receives an Eevee, which would evolve into a different pokemon depending on the outcome of each battle you had with him.

Yellow was different in that Pikachu could not be evolved unless he was traded and then traded back. Not even reaching level 40 would invoke evolution. In addition, it would always tail the player character, and if the PC ever "talked" to the Pikachu, its current mood would be displayed in a small animated window, usually accompanied by a low-quality audio track of Ikue Otani, who does the voice acting for Pikachu. If the game was used in Pokemon Stadium for the N64, her voice acting would replace the creature's usual batte-cry.
Another unique aspect of Yellow is how it tends to follow the anime rather loosely. All three original starters (Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur) are available for the character and can be obtained easily, as opposed to requiring a trade to obtain them, as Red/Blue/Green required.
This game is usually cited as the better of the three, since it used a wider array of colors and its pokemon were more recognizable as those from the Anime.

Each version is different. In red and blue you cannot find all Pokemon from 1 to 150. You cannot find Ekans in Blue version.
In Red, you cannot find Sandshrew. Also, in red and blue, you choose from Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Charmander. In Yellow, you get Pikachu. Pikachu does not stay in the Pokeball in Yellow Version.

News flash: There is no Pokemon Green.

What they said. I loved it when someone pointed out the increased graphics in Yellow.
