Ok Leo's character was the mole for the police, Damon's was the mole for the mob, Damon found out that Jack was giving info to police the whole time that's why he killed him. Mark and Martin's Character were good cops and when Mark got taken off the case and Damon got a hold of the undercovers list then killed Martin. He then started searching for the undercover that interfered with HIS work(leo). Leo was left Jack's things after he died. Which contained all the proof on Damon. Damon found out from the letter that was giving to the girlfriend. Killed Leo and the other cops. and it is never said if mark got a letter too or if the girlfriend told Mark but he was not a bad cop. Hope it helps clear up the story line

Wahlberg's personality easily quits being a cop, so he's not a cop at the same time as he kills Damon's personality, the reason why he replaced into donning what he replaced into donning is because he would not leave any hint of DNA on the scene of the crime -- the proper homicide, because he's universal with what the detectives may be searching for.

See, you are thinking WAY too much. There are so many plot holes and misplaced motivations in "The Departed" that you are best accepting it at face value.
My feeling was the Wahlberg's character was a good cop, but we aren't given a back story on him. We know he hated Damon's character, the real mole. Really, the only reason he's the one who takes revenge is because he's the only one not yet dead.
The writer sloppily writes himself into a corner, and then tries to shoot himself out of it. It's not your fault that you don't understand. No one with half a brain would understand the film as logical by any means.

A cop. It's the same in the original which is a Hong Kong movie called Infernal Affairs. It's explained better in the original and I've seen both! Great flicks!

he was both. he started out in the mob then completed his training to become a cop and he was on the inside as a cop spying for the mob, just like leo dicaprio was on the inside as a mob member spying as a cop....
