I have to go along with Vincent here! Somewhere along the line, sexual organisms began to lay eggs in their reproductive function.
Since the organisms evolved to lay eggs - one could say the chicken came first. But the chicken had to come from somewhere - meaning the egg came first. But a chicken had to have layed the egg - - - this argument just goes around in circles.
My answer - They both came together! The egg, and the organism that layed it, evolved at the same time - one as part of the other until you have modern day chickens and modern day eggs!

Its called the laws of potentiality and actuality. An egg is a potential chicken, and a chicken is an actual chicken. And since actuality preceeds potentiality, the chicken came before the egg. See Substance, potentiality and actuality.
