Another thing that I haven't seen anyone mention is the fact that you need to figure out how they're getting into the house. Seal up any holes with expanding foam so others won't get in. Also, go around the outside of the house and remove old leaves and debris....they love that kind of stuff.

If they are German cockroaches the smaller shiny brown ones the your place or a neighboring apartment is just too dirty just clean up and get an exterminator or if its not your apartment call the superintendent to get on your neighbors. If it is American cockroaches the big dark brown ones they go after water and heat so maybe get a dehumidifier but if your in a city these are very tough to get rid of,most of the time they Will come back, the German ones are the ones too worry about though they breed like crazy, and don't step on the because you can carry their eggs on your shoes.

Though this may be tedious, to do it yourself you have to open all doors, cupboards, drawers, etc. and let off some roach bombs (following the directions of course). After the house has aired out and you get back in, you have to clean the entire house including all dishes. Even the dead roaches' eggs can hatch so it's extremely important that you do a thorough cleaning. Without the cleanup, even with an exterminator, the efforts will be a waste.

My best advice would be to hire a professional exterminator but if you can't afford one then make sure all food is covered and get a few roach bombs and set them off in the house. Then afterwards I would take borax powder and put it in any cracks so that if there are any left over roaches they will eat it and die. Be careful if you have animals though because it can be toxic to them if eaten.

If they are the small brown German roaches, this is a very safe and effective recipe.
You buy POWDER Boric Acid found at drug stores (sometimes you may need to ask the pharmacist for it)
And regular white granulated sugar.
Mix equal parts and sprinkle this along your cupboard edges and on the baseboards in your kitchen.
What the sugar does is attracts them. Once they walk in the boric acid it sticks to their legs and they carry it to their nest. The boric acid dehydrates and kills them and their eggs.
Boric acid is a clean alternative to pesticides or poisons. Also there is no odor like pesticides. It is also safe to have around food surfaces and dishes.

100% guaranteed without fail,if you follow directions! go to the store and buy fresh cucumbers, peel them and slice them. put peelings and all in jar lids or plastic lids, and set them next to any waterpipe source-sinks,showers,tubs,washer etc. within 24hrs. you will notice a big difference! repeat with new cucumbers everyday for 3 days, and then repeat twice a week for 3 weeks. cucumbers are very cheap, and it only takes 3 or4 slices plus a couple peelings per lid. after 2 or 3 days you wont see the roaches, but keep it up the amount of time. it does not kill them, they are allergic to the smell and they leave.guaranteed if done properly!!!

Here are some interesting suggestions that I read about

1. Green frogs or goannas eat them.
2. Rub the inside of a glass jar with Vaseline and put banana at the bottom. You can trap them and they can't get out. This method works.
3. You can also put beer in the bottom and butter on the sides.

This one has to be the best of all
Dr Karl believes if you soak bread in beer for them to eat, they can't expel wind and will blow up.

LOL like to see that one work

The best thing is those roach hotels. Really. We actually got rid of all the roaches in a house we moved into once with just those. We'd tried fogs, sprays, professional exterminators. The roaches only scoffed and came back in days. But the hotels, we just kept them out and eventually the roaches were all gone. We even kept them out after we stopped seeing the critters and occasionally you'd see one in the trap. But then, no more roaches. My advice, keep using them even after you think they're all gone--like up to a year. Even months after you haven't even seen one caught. These work, if you keep them out and keep them fresh.

And if people tell you that you just need to keep the place clean, bullshit. If your neighbors have them--you'll have them. So just keep the hotels out, it works.

Have an exterminator some in and set bombs off. You have to set your food out of the house and yourself and any pets for about 4 hours?

Call an exterminator. Keep your house clean as you can and this will help keep them from being attracted to certain areas. Not saying you don't keep your home clean..but keep crumbs etc. cleaned up as they spill etc. Good Luck
