well, this Q is getting some answers, good no doubt.
i always wondered about the criticism of our western
leaders/governments;but they do inherit war-like machines
and armies, its true that they have-to protect their peoples
as part of their election promises, even if they do not openly
say it.
i think this calls for a revision of the selection of
western governments(and not warlike socialists or rightists).
Fortunately most people are peaceable, they have vivid
imaginations and are cooperative rather than divisive;
As one contributor remarked, we live in a densely populated
world which means we have to work with mass populations.
It was not always like this; and even only until recently have
the leading countries of the world, had full and free education
for all their citizens.
In places and areas where education is
not for the mass of people-there peace studies cannot dominate(and these studies inc basic math and reading/
writing).
And lastly, although our education is in the main "darwinian",
- eg survival and increased learning for the fittest(!),
nonetheless peace has come about through the study of
lots of (darwinian) subjects like law-and order/computor
science(technology)/economics etc.
Finally, any individual may well be subject to our accusations
and rational criticism;in an open society they are free to
some peace,some order,to evaluate and respond-not
just to have their say but to increase the knowledge-base.
That this could happen, and grow,in some peaceful corner
of the world is more than possible, even in our modern time.

There is no opposition to our own imagination. What do think got us into this global mess in the first place? Our own imaginations!
The reason we are convinced that the world could never live in a peaceful state is because we refuse to life unselfish and wise lives.
Take the ten commandments. If six billion people adhered to those ten simple commands God would guarantee you peace. For as long as the current population held to those commandments you can bet peace would reign.
However..... I feel that you yourself reading my answer would probably think it's a foolish and religious idea. Billions of others would say the same.
But go ahead and see where the commandments suggest, any war, lies, or sacrifice, stealing, any hatred, or lust, fear, and adultery, greed, or coveting someone Else's talents and belongings.Do the commands order disrespect, and do they say work on it till you die of exhaustion?
Look them over and every commandment is for the benefit of peace. The trouble is not enough people are listening, we are only listening to our own counsel, and that lacks a great deal of wisdom.
Now you have an idea of why so many cannot see peace in our world. There are other reasons but I'm not going to get into all of it. No space here for that.

Just because we can imagine a peaceful world does not mean that one can surely exist. I could imagine one, but it isn't practical, and it most certainly is not probable. We don't believe it is likely because we're familiar with human nature. There are many people on this planet who are in opposition to each other for all sorts of reasons and in all sorts of manners, the only way to achieve peace is to eliminate those oppositions. So, either we imagine a fantasy world where people just simply agree or agree to disagree, entirely peacefully. Or, we imagine a terrifying dystopian future where peace is a law and men and liberty suffer at the hands of an oppressive government for the expense of the laws of peace. Really, it just isn't practical. I have an imagination, what about you?

Convinced? Who’s convinced?
Not me!
Could the world ever live in a peaceful state?
Yes the world could live, even thrive in a peaceful state, but only when the species that has evolved within this world, in terms, can convince themselves to fully understand its purpose. To simply progress forward with love, understanding and peace.
It may be to late, yet we still may have time for peace but it is doubtful.
The world is very chaotic these days, that much is true. But did you know that the chaos is caused by one of our most primal emotions, FEAR. Fear has a lethal grip around every one of us….and it’s getting tighter by the day.
What do we fear?
Spiders? Thunder? Death? God??
We all fear something whether we admit it or not and as long as fear exists, peace, love and understanding will not.
If we abolish fear from this planet, hate and anger will soon follow.
-PEACE will only be achieved, when LOVE RULES.
(Understanding becomes love, love becomes peace)
Until then, I would advise anyone and everyone who is reading this to start praying.
If you are a non-believer in God, then here is a tip.
Understand your fear then in turn, abolish your fear.
You must literally "Stop and Smell the Roses" and "never judge a book by it's cover". Clear your head and begin to understand existence. Many call it "enlightenment". What ever you want to call it, it is only until you can fully understand what is going on around you that you will be ready.
When you use your eyes to view this world, ALWAYS LOOK PAST THE VISUAL IMAGE, as our brains have been conditioned since birth to view this world in a very narrow and single minded way. It is time to understand what you see, why you see what you see, and what it really is that you see.
History is the best predictor of the future and as things are happening so rapidly, we can literally predict the future right now.
We are going backwards, I know you see it...right? Yup, we are going in reverse, and it's getting faster. There was a point in time where the backwards progression started. Actually there are a few key turning points on our human timeline that helped to fuel our reverse.
The sad truth is this,
Soon, this world, and our rather narrow visual interpretation of this world will fall in on itself.
Then this world will reset it's clock.......back to zero.
I'm ready, are you?

Only in Shangrila. A peaceful world is a pleasant thought, tho it is only in the imagination. There will always be conflict since everyone is made different and has the right to form their own opinion, not everyone will agree with what someone else believes. There are even conflicts in the animal kingdom, there will always be the strive for dominance

It kind of goes against human nature. People have a dark side, and a warlike side. You can't deny it. As long as there are more than two people in this world you will probably have conflict.
Don't get me wrong, I can imagine a peaceful world but I don't see it happening in reality. Also, perfect peace might be perfectly dull.

Using our imagination doesn't bring about reality, that's why it's an "imagination". Humans for as far back as we can see have been full of hate for eachother leading to violence and war. As long as people have freewill to form their own opinions there will always be differences between them that lead to hate and violence. But take away our freewill and you take away what it is that makes us human.
But billions of people (everyone in the whole world) living in harmony- no hate, no murder, no jealousy, no greed, no cheaters, no liars, no racism, everybody understands everyones differences, everyone loves everyone... It's just not even a remote possibilty nor will it ever be.

If it's so difficult for even family members to get along, then it looks doubtful that people of so many different races, religions and beliefs to truly live in peace for any length of time. We see children hating parents, brothers fighting brothers, sisters doing the same. How are people going to find peace if they can't create harmony in their own homes?

Thousands of years of history to the contrary . . .
Unfortunately , peace has only occurred in a few places and for a limited time.
With the escalating challenges from the exponential growth of population , and the dwindling resources worldwide , including drinkable water . . .
The chances for peace diminish daily.

Do you think a person like Plato was opposed to "using his imagination"? For it was he who said: "It is only the dead who have seen the end of war." To the people dying in the Sudan, "using their imagination" is not enough.
