Ok.... number 1, GenevievesMom doesn't know her back side from a hole in the ground. They don't grow good coney dogs in garbage city. And she must have only purchased her gyro at the airport cuz there are plenty of places with the fresh sliced (pressed, spiced) lamb. So anyway. All that crap they shove on a hotdog in chicago is dispicable, but hey you eat it. Good for ya. Around here we do coneys the way we do coneys. Chili, Mustard, Onions. Nuff said. Best place in town is Lafayette Coney island, corner of Michigan Avenue and Lafayette. American Coney has the actual corner, right next door is Lafayette. American is just too damn pretty. Nobody in town announces they are going to grab some 'American Coney's'. Its Lafayette or nuthin! You can walk from Michigan to Lafayette through Lafayette Coney Island. These guys have handled more hotdogs at 2 in the morning than Paris Hilton. They close for like 4 hours each morning. Gimme 3 on 2 (one for the lady), Chili Cheese Fries, 2 Cokes (or beer). Sit down next to a judge, 2 construction guys, a lawyer, some bum with his bowl of chili, fathers with their kids on the way to/from a tigers game, cops, limo drivers. Everybody goes to Lafayette. You want something other than hot dogs, chili or fries? Keep walkin.
Lafayette Coney Island hits the mark when you say 'famous'.
Everything below is just 'Good Eats'!
You want some good corned beef? Pastrami? Get your butt to The Bread Basket Deli. nuff said. You want frilly, you want fancy. Go get your food somewhere else (ditto for Lafayette). You want it GOOD? Bread Basket Deli baby. No doubt. There's one in Livonia, west of the City. It don't show on the search below. Dunno, something about the original owner sold the other three, opened this fourth and had the rights to use the name. Props to The Stage Deli. Damn good Gazpacho.

Hi, check out a place called Lafayette coney island on Lafayette Boulavard. I am in arizona now, but grew up in the Detroit area and i do miss the coney island dogs a lot. Believe me you won't regret trying them. They are like a trademark in the detroit area. There is also american coney island on michigan ave. these restaurants are both in the downtown area and are both sooooooooooooooo good. In fact i hoping that they will open a coney island here in the phoenix area. the hot dogs here are not the same.so please try them when you are in detroit. take care, Laurie k.

You'll be disappointed, sad to say. The Weiner's Circle and Gold Coast Dogs don't have anyone in their class in the entire Detroit metro area. There are some decent coney dog places, especially Plato's on Ford Road near Merriman in Garden City. But it's just not the same. No one in this state would ever consider putting celery salt on their hot dogs...it's a crying shame.
BTW...forget good gyros in this town, either. They buy the meat frozen and precut...it's despicable!

The hot dogs in Detroit are okay, not like Chicago, more like NYC. Try the Lafayette or American Coney in dowtown Detroit. For sandwiches, Elf McNally's in the Corktown section of Detroit is the best! It's near Tiger Stadium, so you get to look at the place that Ty Cobb played before they tear in down.
For a ham sandwich, split pea soup, or bean soup (nothing else on the menu) go to Mike's Ham Shop on Michigan Ave and West Grand Blvd. NOTHING LIKE IT!
Enjoy Detroit - It's a great place to visit - for a couple of hours...

Downtown there is American Coney, but you have to do the coney thing. With all the fixings=Onion, coney, mustard and Cheese.
If you are downtown, you can try Pizza Poppalis, which is a Chicago Style Pizza. Great stuff!
Deli Unique use koser hot dogs. They are pretty good and a DANG good sandwich. But, You can only find them in the burbs.

If you go to Lafeyette Coney Island (which would be the best of our best, sad to say) you have to go to the bathroom in the place to get the full experience. Its totally creepy like it was made for hobbits. It gives you a feel of how old the building is.

For hot dogs go to Hippo Dogs located in Troy on Rochester Road. They have the best dogs in the area. If you are looking for a sandwich, you have to try Star Deli located in Southfield. It's at 12 mile and Telegraph. It's carry out only, but a great Deli. If you want dine in, try Embers Deli in Birmingham on Maple or Slows BBQ located in Detroit.
Enjoy!!
