'Private' is the lowest rank in the US Army. That ranking indicates that Ryan was brand new to the Army...probably just out of basic training.

When someone enters either the Army or Marines, their initial rank is "private". This is an "enlisted" rank as opposed to being an officer rank. Enlisted ranks run from E-1 through E-9. Officer ranks run from O-1 through O-10. Warrant officers from W-1 through W-5.

In the Army, private is E-1 and E-2. E-3 is "private first class". In addressing any of these persons verbally, the term "private" in front of their name is used.

In the Marines, E-1 is a "private". E-2 is a "private first class". Both are addressed verbally with "Private" in front of their names.

By the way, I was in the Air Force, so I was an "Airman Basic" when I first entered and I was addressed verbally using the term "Airman" in front of my name. When I reached E-4, I became a "sergeant". Since that time, (many years ago) the ranks in the Air Force have changed a bit. Nowadays, someone in the Air Force doesn't become a "sergeant" until the grade E-5 when he or she becomes a "staff sergeant". After that rank, each is a different type of sergeant (technical sergeant, master sergeant, senior master sergeant, or chief master sergeant).

Sorry if this was more than you wanted. I was in the Air Force for twenty years.
