Cramps, food cravings, mood swings, different-coloured discharge, bloating - all these could happen (very minor or very intense) for up to a week or so before your first period.
For the first year or so, you'll get all kinds of these things, sometimes just a little, sometimes none, sometimes a lot while your body adjusts to the new hormones flooding your system.
And over time you'll just know when you're going to have your period just by how you feel - I get light cramps and feel a little light-headed about 24 hours before my period starts.

Its all up to the individual, you might start with really bad cramps and then nothing might happen for a few months, on the other hand you might get cramps and start your period right away. It's all up to your body and your hormones.
Once its there, it just comes, you might or might not suffer from cramping and it just starts bleeding. You can also get weepy and irritable a couple days before it comes.

For me, my breasts gets sore and I feel unreasonable urges to snap at people, for reasons I cannot otherwise understand. I can feel my blood pressure rising. Weird.
Of course, this only happened in my 40's. In my teens and twenties, there were practically no advance symptoms, sorry.
OH! Except, there's a mucus discharge in the week before.

Usually, you get a little blood the first time, and later on (not much later) you'll get your first period. I got mine about 5 months after turning 11. but its different for everyone, so no worries. : ) usually before you may get mood swings or breast tenderness.

It can vary from woman to woman but for me I noticed that I get major cramps, I get grumpy and more emotional right before my period..I also tend to have a larger appetite for sweet things.

I always try and look for signs, today for example because I'm a month late...and surprise! It was a surprise becaue I had no IDEA that it was going to be a day, even though I pay attention to my body's signs. I'm sure for some people they get pms and they can tell that way, but I sure can't!

most girls will get cramps, breast tenderness.. and are said to having a craving for chocolate...*...when i started for the first time though, i didnt feel anything... i didnt know i was gonna start at all...i guess it depends on the person and their eating and exercising habits..girls who are very athletic or very obese sometimes stop their period until theyve gained or lost some weight...

I just get a feeling that it's coming. Even if I don't check the calendar, I'm usually not off by more than a day or two

I didn't get any warning signs before I started mine. (But I wouldn't have known what to look for, anyway!) Probably it will be a surprise. If you're worried, you can carry a pantyliner (mini-pad) in your purse or backpack so that you'll always have one ready when you need it!
