Why is it that there's still a stigma against men who grow out their hair in back, even a little long?

Just curious, I like shorter hair in back myself..but when it does grow a little long, I feel that people don't accept me as much. And I live in a non-conservative town.

I have short hair as well, but I haven't took notice to that around here. I think I'll let mine grow just to see if I'm treated differently.
