To put it simply the Queen has an immense amount of power. In 'theory' the Queen is the most powerful Head of State in the world. She is the only Head of State in the world that is over more than just one nation. In fact she is Queen over 16 countries. The monarch in Britain can not only dissolve parliament and open it, she can fire Tony Blair and pick a new prime minister. Lots of people write her off as simply a figurehead, that is simply not true. Do not forget that it is "Her Majesty's Government" not "Tony Blair's Government". The powers that the prime minister uses are those of the Crown, namely Queen Elizabeth. Picture it as if it were a soccer game, the Queen is the referee. She is neutral (politically) and yet when she acts it is decisive. The reason she does not use her powers on a day to day basis is because it could lead to a constitutional deadlock. But don't be fooled she has taken her Coranation Oath and she takes it very seriously. Besides the written rules, she has an immense amount of experience and respect throughout the world and when she gives advice, people listen.
