Send a nice note, and maybe a picture of you for your neice. I have 2 brothers, when my little girl was born a note and a "can't wait to meet you" to the baby was worth much more than a toy or outfit that she'd soon outgrow. If you really want to send something, a small gift, like a $5 board book (a book that has hard cardboard pages instead of thin paper one), is good, and write in the front cover "love uncle...."

Gift cards, you can put $20 on a gift card, pop it in a cutesy card, and mail it for cheap.
Don't buy newborn diapers because most moms get a ton of these and babies aren't in the size for very long. Don't buy clothes (unless it's for sizes 9 months and up, and make sure it'll be season appropriate!) because most moms get a TON of clothes for baby in sizes 0-3 months and 3-6 months, more than baby will ever be able to wear.

If I were you I would just put that money away in a safe place and add a little to it each month until you have a sufficient amt. that you want to invest In a gift for your niece or nephew. Other than that and if 20 is all you want to put into it....you can go to target or walmart and pick out a few outfits for the baby....and they can be a little larger in size, they will come in sizes such as preemie, newborn, 3-6 months 6-9 mon, The newborn stuff they will grow out of really fast...so I would suggest a little bigger.....don't go to far in advance due to season changing....you want the outfit to be appropriate for the season.

A gift card so she can buy DIAPERS. Or, a restaurant gift card, so that she and her significant other can have a dinner out without the baby (in a couple of months or when they're ready) on you. That's one of the gifts I received at my baby shower, and I thought it was an awesome idea. Sometimes after you have a baby you forget to take time out for you and your spouse, so it's nice to have something like that waiting in the wings.

No worries, stick it in a card and send for her first bank account.
Or get them a $20 gift card to WalMart.
And, no, people, don't go disrespecting the WalMart gift card. Believe me, I got one and I was ecstatic. They are great for baby supplies....formula, diapers, bottles, bathing supplies.
Oh! I also just remembered 2 books that might be nice.
Robert Munsch - Love You Forever
This book has one strange part that makes you go...huh...but I swear, everyone (esp mothers) that reads it tears up. It's about a mother who rocks her sleeping son and sings a special song to him throughout his life until she is too old and sick to do it and the roles are reversed. Look it up...seriously
Shel Silverstein - The Giving Tree
You might be able to get one or both delivered to your sister and stay in budget.

Clothes! Most baby clothes that you can buy at Target or Wal-Mart are only 10 bucks and then you can spend the rest on shipping. Take it from a woman who loves to buy baby stuff...you can never have enough baby clothes! If you want to be more creative how about a baby book with a handwritten message from you to your new niece! Anything with sentiment would be a great gift!

Send her a gift card or the money in a card for the newborn baby. Thats the best present if you ask me because then she can get anything the baby will need.

Do you/your parents have any funny pictures of you and your sister from when you were kids? My mother in law sent me 2 framed pictures of my husband from when he was little when our son was born- one of him dressed as a cowboy (with rainboots on instead of cowyboy boots and his guns are in his holster backwards), and another of him standing with a suitcase and his teddy bear...he was running away from home- he was 4. They are priceless and sit on the shelves in my baby's room.
I am sure she just went to the kodac picture maker and had 5x7's made and she included a note about each of the pictures. Warmed my heart- especially since she is as poor as a church mouse and had less money to spend than you. It is not the amount of the gift- it is the thought. Give her something she can have forever. She won't remember a gift card.

Are you crafty? If so, make something personalized for the baby to hand on the wall in her room , or go to a craft store - they have lots of kits to make cute little gifts.

A card. I'm sure your sister will understand, and wouldn't want you spending your last dollar on her. You'd probably use up your $20 just shipping something to her, so stick with a card and a $.39 stamp. Write something mushy.
