Forget winzip.

Get Alzip (its Free & fully Functional)

You CAN use the trial version of WinZip and WinZip is fine. Just open WinZip and add the files you want to password protect. Then select Encrypt... from the Actions menu. There's a Help button on the Encrypt dialogue box. Read the Help topic carefully as there are caveats to using encryption. After creating an encrypted zip file, just attach it to an e-mail as you normally would any other file. For help with attachments see your e-mail software's help file.

This is quite easy if you're using windows XP.

There is an option to archive a file which is good practice when sending a file attach since this file will be significantly smaller in size than the original.

Right click on the file you want to send. Then click on the Add to archive icon. After that choose RAR or ZIP, usually it's ZIP but I find RAR compresses smaller than ZIP, and last choose the advanced option on the top, you should see Set Password, click on that, put in your desired password, press OK and that's it.

A file will be created and password protected usually in the same folder as your original unprotected file.

Open winzip and create a new .zip file. Select the files you want to add and mark encrypt added files. Then add the files.
