They were, and still are two strokes.

As mentioned by another old fart like me that remembers the old DT1's, the bikes changed the face of American off-roading.

But the line lives on in Europe where the EPA hasn't gotten a stranglehold on the marketplace.

What year is the bike? I had a 1976 Yamaha DT100 in 1980. At that time all the DTs were 2 stroke with a reserior that injected oil I believe it was under the seat. So fill up that reserior with 2 stroke oil and off you go. You should smell and see some oil. It's 20 to 1 ratio from the reseroir.
If it;s some later or very new model, well you could tell by the sound of the engine. If it sounds like a two stroke and you have no oil in the gas well you won't hear it for too much longer if you keep running it. Enjoy!

As any old dude can tell you, the DT was a 2-stroke. The Yamaha DT1, a 250 dual-sport, was introduced back in the early 70s. It was part of the new wave of reliable, easy to handle Japanese bikes that coincided with the youth movement (the generation born immediately after WW2). Perhaps tsunami is a better word since the entire British bike industry was wiped out, and H-D survived only because of the loyalty of its riders and the support of after-market companies such as S&S.

There has never been a DT 4 stroke, it is a 2 stroke. The XT is the 4 stroke.
