I had a cesarean and my husband went with the baby to the nursery. He could have stayed in with me but the baby was much more important to be with than I was. I just have nightmares about babies being switched...

Assuming you are talking about a vaginal birth.
Absolutely, the husband stays. The nurse (bless all nurses!!!) cleans you up and, in my case, took me to the washroom ( I think they need to actually see you pee). I can't remember but I think another nurse cleaned up the babies and my husband held them while it all happens.
After the baby is born and the cord is cut, you also still have to deliver the placenta and get any stitches you may need.
Then, bless the nurses again, they leave you with your baby and husband so that you all can have some private time together. Or you can choose to try breastfeeding right away if you want.
The nurse even set up a cot for my husband to sleep on and he also got a wristband that identified him as the father so that he could take the baby for a little walk if he wanted to.

Usually they will clean the baby up some and hand him/her to you. During that time they will clean you up some, stitch if necessary, deliver the placenta, monitor blood flow and make sure your uterus begins to contract back to its normal size. Sometimes they will also "massage" your stomach to help ease blood flow and encourage contractions. The husband can stay through all of this. In fact, if everything went and is going okay, you and him will be so busy admiring your new baby you will not really even notice what the doctor and nurses are doing (especially if you have had an epidural because then you cannot even feel anything).

I had my baby at a really nice hospital that allowed the husband/father to stay in the room, actually while they were cleaning me up he got to go help the nurse give our new baby girl her first bath. Then he came back to move me from the labory room to the recovery room. Later they brought us "Katie" after she had all her test and was checked out. The baby and husband can stay in the room with you all the time. If you want to get some sleep the nurses will keep the baby for you in the nursery until u request for the baby. I didnt do that...i kept her by my side ..she was so cute. Good luck..when are you due?

Right after the baby is born they should let you hold the baby for a few minutes. Dad can stay there the whole time. He never has to leave you at anytime. They then put the baby in an incubator, clean the baby up and put a gown on the baby. While the clean the baby up they make sure your uterus is starting to go back to its original state and if you are ripped they sew you and give you a maxi pad to wear.

Well they clean you up with the father right in the room. In fact my husband, brother, 2 sisters, mother, 3 nephews and 1 niece were all in the room as well - I couldn't believe that they let everyone in. The all crowded around the baby that was in the scale and I no longer existed...that may have been a good thing at the time.

Yes if you had a vaginal delivery, you have to deliver the afterbirth. It's not bad, you're usually too interested in watching the baby to even notice, they just say push and it's out. Then stitches if you tore your peritoneum (sp?), and removing the epidural if you had that. Many hospitals now let the baby stay with you for a little while (I got to stay with my dd for an hour), then they take the baby to clean him/her up, measure them, etc. My husband stayed with me the entire time.

They allow the husband to be with you the whole time nowadays. He can even follow the baby to the nursery if the baby needs to go there.
And if you ask real nice and they haven't run out of them yet, they will bring a cot for him to sleep on. But don't wait to late to ask or they run out of them sometimes if it's busy.
