When I took my new job, I was told that my medical insurance would begin coverage on April 1st. I am now being told that I won't be covered for a "while". Meaning, whenever "they " feel I have proved myself. What can I do?

I would have never quit my old job (that had excellent benefits), for a job that has no definate timeline for coverage. My life depends on my monthly medications, and without insurance it costs me over $600.

I accepted the job based on the fact that I would be getting benefits on April 1st. I guess I just assumed that if that's what the owner told me, then that's what would happen. It must common practice for employers to lie to gain quality employees...and I'm in upper management.

Oh yeah, I have a witness. We all actually went into detail about it. We must have talked about it for at least 15 minutes. We talked about waiting periods, and found out there was none, and I even got the packet of stuff.

Let this be a lesson to always get an offer of employment in writing, on company letter head, signed by the hiring manager or HR person. You have unfortunately learned a hard lesson a bit too late - there are unscrupulous companies out there who will pull a "bait and switch" to get someone in the door.

If you have any witnesses to the promise of benefits, or if other employees were also promised things that did not materialize, you may have a case for breach of promise. Check with your local labor board.

Otherwise, polish that resume and start looking for a better workplace that delivers on their promises.

Every job I have ever had, the insurance started 90 days after starting. There is a problem here. I know where you are coming from with the cost of Rx. Mine WITH insurance is $500 a month. Check with HR. Get a copy of the company's benefits program or company policies. You should find it stated somewhere about when health insurance begins. I will bet it says 90 days from start date. They are just going to put you off and put you off (since THEY are going to pay for it) as long as they can.

Good luck
