Charles and Eddie's 'Would I Lie To You' (1992). The lyrics are:

Lead vocal: Look into my eyes
Can't you see they're open wide
Would I lie to you baby
Would I lie to you.

Backing vocal: Oh yeah!

It gets worse: the lead vocalist the adopts the same approach in the 2nd half of the chorus.

Don't you know it's true,
girl there's no-one else but you,
would I lie to you baby, YEAH!

Um...

lexo80 - I'm confused by what you said, because the 'Cheat!' shout makes perfect sense in the context of the lyrics:

Many, many, many nights go by.
I sit alone at home and cry over you.
What can I do? [...]
Is it true what they say about you?
They say you'll never, ever, never be true.

The same doesn't apply to the Charles and Eddie song.

file_under_water - that's a great answer... but then why does the lead add the 'yeah' bit himself at the end of the chorus? (Yes, I am just being pedantic, but the point stands!)

I don't see how that's a self-contradiction. The backing vocals could be mocking, as it were, the main vocal.

A precedent for this is the Shirelles' 1961 hit 'Baby It's You', in which the singer sings 'You should hear what they say/about you' and the backing singers sing 'Cheat! Cheat!' The Beatles covered it on their first album.

Alternatively, whoever arranged 'Would I Lie To You' just wasn't paying attention, which I admit is more likely.

the song doesn't contradict itself, the backing vocals simply reaffirm what the singer is saying.the lead singer is singing to a woman i presume and the backing singer is helping his mate in this sorry predicament
