Bare basics will come to about $100,000. But first research your area to see what the interest is in a "family oriented" restaurant. That term can have various meanings from "a place for couples, groups of friends or parents and children" to "exclusive to anyone outside of an imagined Christian norm."

There are a lot of variables..
Where/location?
Taking over an established business or starting from scratch?
What do you mean by small?
Liquor license needed?
Do you plan on getting a loan? From who?
To franchise or not?
Experience in the business?
That should be your first step - a job in the business. So you can find a mentor that would be willing to teach you the ropes.
The odds are not so hot when it comes to opening a new restaurant. So do your homework. LOTS OF IT!!!!!!
