The realistic and natural representation of people, places, or things in a work of art is realism. A still life, a scenic painting of the spring time, paintings of flowers are all examples of realism. Its like a photograph on canvas. The painting will be exactly what you are looking at. Realism tries to portray life as objectively as possible. The realistic artist tries to keep his own preconceived notions out of his art but rather to just report what he sees as accurately as possible, “warts and all.”
Impressionsim is your idea of what you are looking at. Impressionism includes visible brushstrokes, open composition, emphasis on light in its changing qualities ordinary subject matter, and unusual visual angles.

Let's say you see two pictures of the same place, one made by a realist and one by an Impressionist. You look at the one made by the realist and think: I know exactly where that is. It looks exactly like that place, right down to those two small rocks next to the bridge. It's exactly as I have seen it, no more and no less. What great observation this artist has. Then you look at the one made by the impressionist and think: Well, it doesn't look exactly the way I saw it, and I think there is a hill over there that doesn't exist, but it makes me feel just like I feel when I am there. Something about the colors and the light give it the atmosphere of the place. How is that done?

Realistic painters painted scenes of real life -- prostitutes, gutters, slums, etc. and made it all look pretty. Impressionists painted things to look as we should see them and not as we think we see them. For instance, we never really see every leaf on a tree, even though it seems to us that we can see each separate leaf and separate it from the other leaves. It is a huge subject and I can't really explain it here, but I have given you a starting point.

Say you needed glasses .... really badly, like Van Gogh .... impressionism would be what you painted without your glasses on, and realism with them. {*-*}
