There's been over 20 close calls during the Cold War and Post Cold eras, from the Cuban Missile Crisis to the accidental training tape incident at NORAD in the late 1970's, to the more recent 1995 incident involving a Norwegian science satellie launch. The hair triggers nearly put the world into a nuclear inferno. Most people in the world did not know how close they've come for the nuclear sword of damacles to come tumbling down on their heads.
Even today, we only stand 28 minutes from a nuclear holocaust at any given time. The aging Russian early warning systems and their reduced security after the break-up of the Soviet Union should be real concerns.
If anything, a nuclear war will be the result of accidental launches from a false alarm from the two 'strategic' superpowers.
At the point of a full-scale nuclear exchange, there won't be any point to know who started it or which countries will be involved. Suffice it to say the northern hemisphere will have been plunged into prolonged agony and barbarity. In the first 30 minutes of the war, 1.1 billion people will have been vaporised, mostly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. Another 1 billion will have died soon after from radiation poisoning.
Those that survive will face at least two years of global impact winter which will have killed all plant life due to the lack of sunlight. Will humanity survive, doubtful. Anyway, sleep tight...

At a 1998 breakfast meeting with an older couple, a US military/intelligence man who said he had "all the top security clearances" and his wife, the wife commented that biological weapons would never come from the US, they'd rather come from "Saddam Hussein or some vogue nation".
I looked deeply into the man's eyes. He said, "They'd come from us. The US is the meanest country in the world."
Now I'm not saying that myself. I have no military/intelligence background. However, it is true that with a military many times larger than all the world's militaries combined, only the US could in practicality initiate World War III - and, sadly, has likely already begun it with the false-flag blackop called "911" and preemptive (strike-first) wars in the Middle East.

Here's a thought: India and Pakistan. They've been warring over Punjabi for so long, and both are nuclear.
Here's another thought: Russia and the US. Putin seems to be leading his country back into authoritarian government, and appears to disapprove of the US. My guess is Chavez and his allies will get involved on the side of Russians, considering his political tendencies and extreme dislike of Bush.
North Korea and the US warring seems unlikely. Consider the negotiations... but if they go badly it could exacerbate problems with China.
If the US's relationship with China becomes more antagonistic over time due to economic rivalry, there could be a war generations from now. Not at the current time, though. The antagonism, while it's vaguely perceptible, is not even close to firmly entrenched enough to begin a war.

Iran is hostility waiting to happen. China will likely try to make some big power plays in the next few decades. Israel is always in trouble, and always will be (see Bible). All these countries are nuclear. and of course, the USA will run in to 'save the day' whenever a big war starts...

I would say maybe China, Iran, ur North Korea. Iran, even though it says it doesn't have nukes, they preach a jihad, or holy war. Plus, you can;t trust a country like Iran, they could have nukes already, and they hate Ameria and Israel, and they are really anxious to wipe us all out completely. China too. China right now is becoming a superpower and is communist. Comunist nations are very moody and picky, so if they don't get their way they get angry. You don't want to mess with China right now. They could also be eager to expand their territory. They took over Tibet in the 20th century, and I hear they are eager for taiwan. I think Taiwan is protected or backed up by the US if in a war. If China invades taiwan, we could help, getting us involved in the war, and when you have 2 countries fighting eachother, and they both have nukes, WWIII is a very likely possibility. North Korea is communist too. And North Korea has nukes too. The North Koreans I think are even more eager to destroy the US than China. And king Jon Yil is mental so if he wants to bomb the US, WWlll will happen. The US has many allies and North Korea are friends with China and Russia

Iran might want to start up it in spite of the undeniable fact that the major participant adverse to the united states wll be China. in spite of if it went nuclear China may benefit, starting to be the most advantageous united states in Asia without competition from the west.
