Even working women 'stay' at home, they never go out and have any kind of fun. These SAHM also have an abbreviation for their husband, DH (commonly known as Dumb Husband) why don't they call him their WM (Working Man) or GTWH (Go To Work Husband)?

We seem to be fascinated with labels in this country. "Stay at home mom" came about to differentiate between moms that stay at home full time, and moms that work out of the home. FYI..both of these groups do go out and have fun on occasion. I guess its to have an answer when people ask "what do you do?". If i had to give the actual list of all my duties, it would take an hour. I've never had an abbreviation for my husband, I just call him Master ..hehe

These days women have a choice of occupations they can pursue. SAHM is an acronym to let people know the woman does not have an out of home job. I see nothing wrong with it, as most SAHM's work much harder a lot of the time than women with outside jobs. It takes a lot of patience and dedication to be one. And if you are one, consider yourself fortunate that you have a partner who is able to provide for the family well enough to enable you to dedicate yourself to it full time.
BTW, DH stands for Darling Husband.

Hmm....what else could we call them? Primary caregivers? How about Women Not Employed Outside the Home? Let's see, that would be WNEOH. I do agree, us moms do tend to be much more stay at home than most dads, but I can't think of a better term for it. I always thought DH meant Dear Husband? And, I have seen SAHD (dad), so I guess it can go both ways.

I am a SAHM, but never refer to myself as such. I personaly hate that term. But baby making & pregnancy keep you home if the husband has a sucessful career. Some moms, must do the imppossible, and work and raise kids. I would never refer to my husband as DH.... He is my GQ Man!

some women consider it a noble calling to abandon the working world for their children (i plan to do so once (and if) we can have kids), but idiots who then refer to their husbands as "dumb" are probably just sitting on their bums watching soaps and yelling at their kids. i would never call the person who brings money, food and shelter into the home "dumb".

and working women should get out and have fun, especially with their husbands!!! i don't know where this feeling came about that husbands and wives aren't supposed to like each other very much, but why would you want to enter into a lifelong committment with someone you don't like or think is stupid? duh!!

I am a stay at home mom. I don't go out to work. My work is at home and my NOT SO DUMB HUSBAND works his butt off so that I can be at home for our children. Who ever has the gaul to call their husbands dumb may need to go out in the world and earn their own money.

Added: Bryan M...Well said. That is exactly how life is around our house.

Because that what we choose to call our selves that is why. I am a stay at home mom by choice and i love it. I go out and have fun when i want to and my husband and i go out alot as well and do fun things together. I love being at home for my husband and kids. Myhusband is a working man and i am so proud of him for this as he is a hard worker and great provider and husband for and to us. I love and honor him for this and all he does for me and the kids. I could not ask for a better husband. I love what i do at and around the house and i choose and much rather would be here for my kids and my husband then to be out there working and away from them.

Yes, but women who work are sending their children with someone else to be raised. SAHM's are with their children 24 hours a day 7 days a week. They are raising their children, not someone else. Obviously you have never been a SAHM or you would understand the difference.

Currently in our society, a woman may or may not be one who brings in income from outside the home. Many grandmothers and great-grandmothers didn't need to identify themselves this way. Bringing in income was not something a woman was expected to do. Today, not to bring in income known as unemployment, and therefore be looked down upon. I don't believe anyone looks down upon their grandmothers for raising their parents.
