Today after completing a right hand turn and turning my blinker to the off position, the sound continued in a much more rapid succession. It continued this for several minutes, slowed down, stopped for a few seconds, and then picked up again.

I got out of my car while it was doing this and saw that my lights were not themselves blinking. When I turn on my blinkers, the signal on the dash shows that it is working correctly, and it makes the regular sound. However, immediatly after I turn off the blinker, the craziness resumes.

How do I fix this?

The car is a Pontiac Grand Am 2004

Customer Concern: The turn signal flasher clicks intermittently. The turn signal lights do not come on when this happens.

Tests/Procedures: 1. Move the turn signal switch slightly up or down and if the flasher stops clicking, replace the turn signal switch.

Potential Causes: Shorted turn signal switch

You either have a turn signal switch of flasher malfunction. The turn signal switch is located behind the steering wheel on the Grand Am and requires special tools to change. The flasher is underneath your dash; looks like a small round aluminum tank. They are cheap and can be changed by just unplugging. Flasher part #552, If I can recall.

Besides the possible blinker defect, there could be a bad bulb. If it is different when you try left then definitely check the bulbs on the right. Bulbs can also have a poor ground or contact to the connection.

This is a common problem for these cars, and the solution is a new turn signal flasher unit. I strongly recommend buying an OE GM unit.
