Exhaust-Gas Recirculation--a method of reducing NOx (oxides of nitrogen) exhaust emissions by recirculating some of the engine's exhaust gas into the intake manifold. The exhaust gas serves as inert filler that absorbs heat during the combustion process and reduces the peak temperature reached during combustion.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation. This means that some of the exhaust is put back into the cylinder to be used a second time, because there is always some unburnt fuel going out the exhaust pipe (recirculation reduces hydrocarbon pollutants.) It also reduces the maximum temperature during combustion, so you don't start burning your valves and melting your pistons.
