You generally don't want to eat any fish you're going to buy from a pet store. Read a label on a chemical fish treatment like water conditioner, medicine, water test kits. They all pretty much contain a known carcinogen/cancer causing agent and state not suitable for food fish.

Go catch an a wild oscar or tilapia from the Everglades, and they grow quick :)

In South and Central America they eat the fish we keep in large tanks: oscars,Pacus get real big and are edible. Tilapia is sold in supermarkets in NY and is sold in pet stores as small fish and grow big and wild. All are aggressive fish, freshwater tropical and need large tanks, frequent water changes and may have to be kept separately from one another.

just keep in mind that all fish breed to be kept as pets have been at many points in their lives around chemicals people should not eat. All fish are in medicated waters to prevent fungal infections and to treat parasites, some of the meds contain formaldhye, others contain ingrediants that at least state on the exterior of the med. bottle not made for fish for human consumption. JUst fiqured ya'll might want to know that.
