Normally most any small peaceful community fish will go wth a betta, but in a 1.5 gallon tank, he should be alone or you will over crowd the tank.

Well, Bettas usually do like do be alone in a tank but they are capable of living with other fish. Although males cannot live together because they will fight to the death, they will only bully fish that are about their size or who are closely related. They will not bully bigger fish. Some good tank mates are most catfish, loaches, sharks (although they aren't really sharks they just resemble small forms of sharks), and shoaling tetras.

OK, with a tank that small you cannot put any other fish with a male beta. But if you had a larger tank you could put more fish in there. You will need community fish and not any kind of gromi or "nipping" fish because they will nip at the beta's fins. But, betas are from rice fields and are naturally good alone. In fact they prefer it. Cool thing, get real close to the tank (like your nose almost touching it) and not only will he come up to you but he will Bow up to you, as in a fight bow, it's pretty cool.

In a larger tank than what you have, like a 10 gallon, you could put in neon tetras, other small tetras, small catfish, and any other small fish that are quiet.peaceful,non-aggressive and non-fin-nippers. Add some rocks and plants for hiding places for privacy.Small gouramis get along with a betta;they are in the same family.

Fish don't get lonely...he sees you as basically a food source. You have feed him, and he has been trained to follow you for food. A 1.5 is OK for him, but only him...If you get a 5g, you could put 3 male guppy in there with him, or a 10g, you could put 5 male guppy (why males...because they don't have babies).
You can not put another male Betta in with him no matter the size of the tank, nor can you put a female Betta in with him...maybe in a 55 or 75g, but I would not...he would harass her and possibly kill her.
NEVER put a goldfish with anything but goldfish! They prefer cooler water, and give off so much ammonia, that it would kill your Betta.
Your Betta is fine the way you have him...just be sure to do frequent water changes to keep the parameters in ck.
Good Luck!

Bettas are fine with any peaceful community fish. I have one in with guppies. They will gladly eat up any baby fish the others have, though. However, as small as your tank is, he is better off alone. Only schooling types of fish truly "need" other fish.

Don't put a goldfish in that tank with a betta. He'll eat all your bettas food, and die soonafter since it's too small a tank for a goldfish. It is pretty small, but if you get a big larger you can try a dwarf frog or something.

You can try and put A (one) goldfish in with him.... in a 1.5 gallon w/o a filter you will have to change it often. Goldfish produce a lot of ammonia... Betta are generally aggressive fish so it may not take to the goldfish to well.... but since it is a lot lighter in color and doesn't look to much like a Betta it should be fine....
