The laptop has the VGA port. Whenever I start it up the laptop screen appears on the Dell. It then goes black when I reach my password login to access my account. Someone said I can switch it in MS-DOS? mode. Anybody know how to do this?

you need just connect the monitor to the laptop than hit FN key and F6 to switch from the laptop monitor to the external monitor

if that is not working, you can try to access the display properties and switching the monitors on the settings tab. you can hit show which screen is number one or which is number two. that is the identify button. make sure that your laptop is seeing your monitor also. you should be able to use the drop down arrow and see if you see where it is picking up the other monitor. you may have to install a driver for it. that maybe why windows is not registaring the external monitor.

Make sure that your F6 key has the little screen on it, if not call dell and ask them for support or im me to help you.

Dell Laptops usually have a VGA connection out.

You can hook up your laptop to display on an external monitor, but you lose the mobility of your laptop.

And to have dell replace the lap tops monitor, will cost as much as a new laptop. So Id save the hard drive, throw the old laptop out. (Or donate it, people recycle the stuff in them for charity, Gold connectors all over computers)

Hi. Some laptops have a VGA port on the back. This is a 15 pin port that looks something like a D . Try another monitor on this port just to see if it works.

okay... try this...
step1: plug your monitor in your laptop... then restart your laptop.. there should be a display there.. if nothing.. hold the FN key on your keyboard plus the monitor symbol in your keyboard... then 80% sure there will be display...

if there no display again... reboot your PC,,, then start pressing F8... then there will be a option will appear.. then enable the VGA mode... then restart.. then go back to step 1

hope it helps you... please rate my answer.. thanks!!!
