And why are there NBA players who couldn't shoot free throws to save their life?

BEEF... B is Balance. E=Elbow. E=Eyes. F=Follow through.
To answer the other question, coaches do not teach shooting well and players care more about dunks and crossovers and blocks and steals.
The E for elbow is important because the elbow needs to stay in and not fly out. Better stated, the line of the forearm needs to point straight to the rim, not angled off.
The next E means that eyes must stay fixed on the rim throughout the shot. Do not be a ball watcher; it messes with your concentration.
F is important because many players drop the follow through too soon or they pull back on it. When it comes to this F, I teach "Lift and Freeze." Lift to get better arc, freeze the follow through in place until the ball hits the basket.
There are other reasons that the pros are bad at free throws, but I won't take up the space here to discuss it.
