When an egg is fertilized, it divides, making hundreds of cells in a ball called a blastocyst. The blastocyst is just a membrane surrounding a mass of stem cells. Each one of the hundreds of stem cells could become a child and can be separated to make multiple copies, or clones of the offspring.
