My 6 weeks old is screaming in pain every time I feed him, he spits up a lot and his doctore diagnosed him with reflux, but he said he can't be given any medication unless he is loosing weigt, which he is not. But I just can't stand seeing him in such a pain all day, is there any way to help him?

Feed him smaller amounts and burp him more often.

Enfamil AR.
I swore by this stuff.........it is thickened with rice starch so it stays down really well it helps cool the burn.

You really need to get a second opinion. seriously. My daughter had "silent reflux" in that she was not puking all the time or losing weight. But the reflux was burning her throat really badly and she was screaming all the time. she was put on Prevacid at 5 weeks old and it with helped wonderfully......we were also put on the AR (I only used the ready to feed kind) at the same time. We started her medicine and changed her formula 2 days later. She was a perfectly happy baby.........

until now.....she has outgrown the dose, so her reflux came back (she is 11 months and almost off the bottle so the formula could not hold it anymore....she does not get enough formula for that). I rushed her to the doctor 2 days ago from bad acid attacks and screaming. I swore she was 5 weeks old again. Her acid had been out of control for a while, but without the puking, we did not know.....it did not show up til the damage was bad enough for her to start the screaming again.
she now has croup from all the recent damage to her throat. she is on steroids for 5 days and a higher does of the prevacid. so far, so good. But her doc just confirmed that she is NOT outgrowing this and this will be a serious thing that we are going to have to live with. and she is in the 75th percentile for her weight!!
you CANNOT go by weight. you really need to talk to the baby's doctor again, or find a new one. this is very serious.......

There are lots of things you can do:

#1 if you aren't breastfeeding you can relactate, breastmilk is a natural antacid and may stop the pain

#2 Smaller meals more often

#3 Positioning during and after feeds is important, usually on an angle is best but the angle varies from child to child.

#4 Babywear -not only does the position help BUT babywearing babies cry less and crying makes reflux worse. WARNING: some structured carriers are badly designed and place weight on the stomach causing spit up in a GERD baby.

#5 Elevate the crib by placing books under the legs. Usually 10-15 degrees. NEVER place anything on or under the mattress.

AND PLEASE remember that GERD medications ALL have serious potential side effects. And many are not even approved for use in babies under 2.

My daughter had reflux, but she wasn't in any pain. Are you sure he's not suffering with colic too? Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding? If breastfeeding, perhaps he's having a problem with something in your diet that is coming through in your milk. If formula feeding, he could be having a problem with the iron in the formula. My sister's son had this problem and he was also in a lot of pain. Once she switched to low iron formula, he was fine. As for the spitting up, feed him as upright as possible and hold him upright for about a half-hour after every feeding. This will help him hold it down, though he may still spit up so keep a towel handy. He WILL outgrow this in time -- mine did.

seems like the doc is crazy! inever heard of a doctor diagnosing reflux w/o prescribing a perscription as well! maybe your baby has a milk intolerance as well. also, babys with reflux can get fluid trapped in the middle ear which causes pain and pressure. im sure that your doing the cereal in bottle keeping baby in an upright posistion for 1/2 an hour after feeding? also not picking baby up under the arms? it sounds like your baby needs another formula and a perscription for the reflux.

are your breastfeeding or formula, cause the baby could have a intollerance to the formula but as far as not perscribing medicine (such as reglan) for reflex because your baby isnt loosing weight is rediculous. my son had reflux and was still gaining weight. my dr actually told me reflux shouldnt cause the baby to loose weight. i would insist on some meds if nothing is working, like smaller feedings more frequent or get antoher dr.

My son has/had this also. Choking was also an issue for him. My Dr put him on Zantac and I was told to put cereal in his bottle kinda thick but not to thick. I also kept him as upright as possible. They had these wonderful viberating chairs that he spent most his time in. It buckled and fit perfect in the bassanet. I also beleive they also make an over the counter gas relief medicine that helped him as well double check w/your pedi first he could be to little. My son is now 6 and maintains a low acid diet and still has his Zantac. He has learned what he can and shouldn't eat and what his limit of these things are. I wish your little one and you well. You also might want a 2nd opinion.

There would be no harm in trying some form of "wind" drop. I give my son Infacol drops before every feed. He doesn't have reflux but it may help setlle your little boys tummy.

Smack 'm on the bottom!

Seriously, we had one baby that just cried and cried and cried in pain with her legs constantly kicking and knees bending.

Placing her in one arm with my hand over her back end, I'd thumb her rythmically on the diaper. It helped her relax and even go to sleep.

Go figure.

THere is also some naturopathic thing you can get that seemed to work, too... I just can't remember!

Ask your dr about zantac for infants. That is what my baby started on (he never lost any weight but spit up constantly) She also said it was ok to give him 0.5ml of regular Malox for immediate relief. Ask your ped.
