-1 = (1/2)4 + b
-1 = 2 + b
-3 = b

y = 1/2x -3

The equation of a line is y = mx + b where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. You have the slope and an x and a y value. Plug them into the equation and you get -1 = 1/2(4) + b. Now solve for b. -1 = 2+ b. -3 = b. Now you have the y-intercept and the equation is y = 1/2x -3.

y=mx + b
you know m (slope) = 1/2 so you have to find b.
substitute 4 for x and -1 for y...
-1 = 1/2 * 4 + b
-1 = 2 + b
-3 = b
substitute in b and your final equation is:
y = 1/2x - 3
I hope that's what you were asking for.

easy

use formula
y - ysub1 = m (x-xsub1)

plug the 4 and the -1 into this formula, (where it says xsub 1 and ysub1)

y-y1=m(x-x1)
y-(-1)=1/2(x-4)
y+1=1/2(x-4)
2y+2=x-4
2y=x-6
y=(x-6)/2
