I need to do a book report for school; read the book, then write an essay explaining its ideas, values, and views of the author of characters in the story. It must be at least 150 pages long, and is under the category of sci-fi, historical fiction, or classic. The preferred lexile is 900-1400. What are several good reads for this occassion?

I love the novel Hope Was Here, but it doesn't fit under any of the required categories. So far, To Kill a Mockingbird seems the most interesting choice.

Great suggestions so far; it'll be hard to pick a best answer.

How about "The Count of Monte Cristo" or "A Tale of Two Cities". Both are classics. I know "The Count of Monte Cristo" is a lexile 900...."A Tale of Two Cities", I am not sure.

But "A Tale of Two Cities" would greatly fit the historical fiction, especially if you did a little extra reading on the French Revolution and the background for the book beforehand. (Not to mention would probably impress your teacher/instructor if you included some of this in the report.)
