Study after study shows that the attention of a loving caregiver is MORE important in brain development thatn any toy. Particularly if parents speak constantly.

0-3 months. The best thing is a baby gym. Once they hit about 6 weeks old it's a great toy. You can get them with music and it has lots of colors. It can also help while giving them tummy time.

3-6 months. The exersaucer. It helps with their leg strenghth. It has toys that makes noise that they have to pull on or press buttons. It helps them learn how to use their hands. They can bounce up and down on it to. That's a plus. It's a ton of fun to watch.

6-9 months. Teething toys! They are drooling machines and they love to chew on things at this point. Even a little before then. A walker can be okay for it's obvious reasons. Toys that stimulate them. They can press buttons and make noise.

I haven't gotten further then this! Hope it helps.

0-3 months my son loved his swing. loved anything that vibrated like the bouncy seat or had movement like a swing. He also like his mobile- tracking the movement.
From 3-6 months he liked his floor gym type toys- where he could bat at hanging toys.
He is now 7 months old and loves his jumparoo. He loves to bounce himself up and down. He also loves any toy small enough for him to grasp. Teething toys are fun for him and he also loves toys that he can push buttons and they "pop" up at him. He also loves different textured balls. The Gertie brand ball is his favorite. It comes in a bumpy texture and a smooth texture- you can blow them up and fill with as much air as you want so I leave a little "room" in the ball so he can grab it. He loves it!
