Ok. im 34 weeks pregnant. I will be 35 weeks on sunday. I had an ultrasound on the 9th of March. and they said the baby was 4 pounds 4 ounces. Is this to small?

The doctor is sending me for another ultrasound soon. In about 3 weeks. They say the baby is small. My doctor is not worried, but the ultrasound doctors are.

I also still smoke (don't haggle me about smoking during pregnancy, i know its not healthy for the baby or me. I've just been having a hard time quitting) But i don't smoke ALOT. Only 3 or 4 smokes a day. Could that be causeing my baby to be smaller?

Any Answers are appreciated.

well...it is a BIT small for the baby's gestation. and YES smoking is linked to low birthweight babies. but if your dr isn't that worried about it...i wouldn't be either. at this stage in your pregnancy the weight of the baby can be off by a whole POUND in an ultrasound. just relax....you still have about a month to cook the baby....you may not end up with a 8 lb baby but if you go to term the baby still has lots of growing time! good luck

I smoke too, around 18 a day still. I'm also 35 weeks, my baby was 4 lb, 1 oz at my 34 week ultrasound. I've only gained 12 pounds, but I was overweight to start (weigh 218 at the moment).
My doctor said that smoking will only affect the baby's weight by as much as 8 oz, not pounds. I know, we both should have quit, but I'm proud of you for getting down to 3 or 4 a day. It's a lot harder than people think.
I talked to my mom, and she said that I was 2 weeks late and weighed 6 lb, and my sister was a week early and weighed 5 lb. Babies in our family run small.
My best friend is 41 week preggo, she's running late. She smoked a little over a pack the whole time, and her baby is over 9 lbs.
I wouldn't worry, k?

Many things can cause a baby to be small including amount of amniotic fluid.have they checked your fluoid levels? Look...I smoked with 3 of my 4 kids and all of my babies were over 7 lbs..two were 9lbs'ers....so while I dont say smoking is good for babies because it is not I do understand where you are coming from....I limited myself to 2 or 3 smokes a day and my doctor actually told me that if I cant quit all together this was a pretty good idea and the baby would probably not suffer....I would advise stopping the last couple weeks before you give birth because that is when babies lungs are devloping (actually at 35 weeks they are developing now) so you should try and not smoke.Just give up that one smoke then the next day only smoke half of one until you wean off...I want to tell you that ultrasounds are an estimate of babies weight not and exact science....So your baby may actually be bigger..They can measure dimensions but they cant measure girth they really can;t....Your baby may actually weigh more then they are predicting....I had a doctor tell me I was having a 7lb baby and I had a 9lb 3 oz baby....They told me it was a boy and it was a girl...they makes mistakes!

First off ultrasounds are not completely right. I had one about 2 weeks before I had my daughter and they said she was 5 pounds, she came out 7. Second off, if your doctor isnt worried then you shouldnt be. You are only 34/35 weeks prego, which means you have at least another week to go, these last few weeks are when the baby gains the most weight so I wouldnt worry too much, as long as everything else is fine, the weight shouldnt be an issue. I have also smoked during all 3 of my pregnancies and they have all came out fine, so i will not give you a hard time about that.

At 34 wks your baby should be around 6 lbs plus. 3 to 4 smokes a day is a LOT - even though it is a little late in the game, you really should try and quit. Your new baby is already going to be small - they don't need the effects of the second hand smoke too!

If everything else is going well, I'd say yes the smoking is what is causing your baby to be smaller. It's proven that smoking during pregnancy results in smaller babies. I'm mom to 3 and my mom smoked with all 5 of us..we were all just over 6 lbs.

Smoking causes low birth weight. So, yes this could be the reason your baby is small.
I know its hard, but u should have quit. Why not quit now? Lay them down and give your baby the full amt of nutrients for the next 5 weeks. It would be better than continueing to smoke and robbing it of vital oxygen and nutrients.
Lay them down hun. U can pick em back up after your baby gets here. I did it, so can u. Just keep in mind its temporary if u want to pick them back up afterwards and are not planning to breast feed.
Good luck to ya hun.

No, the smoking will not affect the size of your baby. I am a non smoker, but my husband smokes and my father and my mother do. So I also get a lot of second hand smoke. My son was 7 pounds with the second hand. I was 5 pounds and my sister was 9 pounds. My mother smoked during both pregnancys. It just depends on the baby! :) Sometimes if you're larger than expected and the baby is small, they'll do several ultrasounds towards the end to see if you're carrying multiple children. :D

Yeah, that does cause smaller babies. Don't worry. I know a LOT of people who smoked while pregnant and all had healthy babies... my mom smoked with me and my brother, and we ended up weighing 6.0 and 6.6 with no problems at all. Not saying you will or will not have problems... You may just have a really small baby.

Yes it can cause low birth weight and also SIDS so you better hope that your baby is healthy. I wouldn't want to live with the possibility of a unhealthy baby or crib death on my shoulders because of a nasty habit. You need to stop now because when the baby is born second hand smoke will also be bad for him.
