I live near the site, about 3 miles away. I did then as a little child. I've lived much of my life within 5 miles of the original site. I remember a lot of traffic, hippies and litter.
The area was poor then. It still is now. Anything to get a little tourist money is welcome. It was then too. Most people had a "wait and see" attitude. Redneck farmers surrounded by camps and bungalow colonies of poor NYC orthodox and conservative jews. A small run down town a few miles away. Not much has changed. A lot of locals waited a long time to be paid for work or property damage. It was a huge mess and no benefits for the community. For about 90% of us that here then, it is not a good memory, but if you want to go there now, we are still glad to grab your money.
