Good question. First thing first, why is alcohol legal and not marijuana? Alcohol is legal in the States because it comes from the states. It's made in the States. Budweiser, MGD (Miller Genera Draft), and Coors all are American alcohol beverage. Now we do have some imported beer from other countries. But is not like if those brands are preferably in the USA. Because the USA beer beverage is more preferably in the USA.
Now, marijuana is a plant that we have concluded it down to a drug. Which is cool. it's fine; whatever. The reason why marijuana is not legal in America is because is not made in America. Where does this drug comes from? It comes from Mexico, Central America, and South America. And God forbid that someday we have wealthy Brown people in America. Rules change in USA when it comes to other people to rise in power. But that's another story. I can't get off topic.
The real question that I think you should've asked is, why are cigarettes/cigars are legal and marijuana not? Same story, though. But the reason I wanted to tell you this is to think about something. Cigarettes/cigars kill people every damn day. It's killing ingredient: tobacco. As in for marijuana, is jsut a damn drug that causes to hallucinate, feel mellow, feel lazy, just relaxing. And it doesn't not kill people as fast as cigarettes/cigars.
But at the end, all these damn things [alcohol, cigarettes/cigars, marijuana, steriods, and other stupid pills] are drugs. Back in the roaring 20's, people just called it "boot legging." And, no! They did't sell legs with boots; it was just another word to hide it's true deadly identity-DRUG.
Now, I ain't saying that marijuana is good to consume. NO! because like cigarettes/cigars, marijuana has its flaws too. It makes you lazy, causing you to think slow as you consume it on the daily basis. So it will mess the crap out of your mental state! It's true, girl. It's addicting, like cigars. It's just not legal because it's not made in America.
As for your pot-smoking friends, tell them to get off it. Seriously. I mean it. It will turn them stupider then they are. It will influence their head, causing them to feel unmotivated to go farther in school. Tell your friends that it will come in their way in their studies.
So, here. I just gave you my opinion, girl. And this is SOME of the reasons why marijuana is illegal in America.

Pot was criminalized in the thirties because it was a threat to the cotton industries and the booze industries. One report and a movie created a lot of hysteria that was mostly fake and the public backed the government making it illegal. The movie reefer madness and one psychiatrist from California who was hired by the cotton board made pot illegal. Funny as a plant it can produce oil for fuel, pulp for paper, fibres for clothes and you you can smoke the leaves and feel fine the next morning. Alcohol can't do that. No real studies have ever been done on it. But the prohibition on pot has lasted longer than the one on booze and put more people in jail, caused more gun fights and made more millionaires than the illegal booze trade ever did. It's a joke Praise be to the Netherlands for having the brains to see through the crap.

You're not really comparing apples to apples. Alcohol is a stimulant...it stimulates the frontal lobe of your brain..causing more inhibitions to come out.
Marijuana is a suppressant. It is an addictive drug that can cause others to also get high, and is incredibly bad for your lungs. Not to mention it costs more to produce it.
If you think about it, alcohol is not really legal until you are the age of 21 (in the States). So if your friends are drinking alcohol or smoking marijuana, they're breaking the law no matter what.

Well, if you were smoking marijuana in a public place, you run the risk of non smokers getting a contact high. Plus, people can't smoke cigarettes in most public places so why would they let marijuana be smoked publicly? I think you have answered a really great question. I hope you get some good answers.

I think both are equally bad. The government legalized alcohol in order to regulate it. It was too big to ignore. I think marijuana is less popular so the government has not bothered. I believe it will be regulated eventually.

I think it should be legal. I don't see what the difference is. Both are bad for you (of course), but pot isn't as addicting as some prescribed medications and those are legal. Plus there are alot worse drugs your friends could be doing so give them a break!

I don't see the problem with pot. I mean how many car wrecks were caused by someone smoking pot? The only problems it may have is people driving 20 MPH in a 60 MPH zone. Driving high is way safer than driving drunk.

I have to tell you one thing. I went to this drunk/drugs class for court one time. The teacher we had said alcohol KILLs brain cells. Weed only "insulates" the brain cells. He said if you were going to do one, that weed would be the way to go. After so long of a time after you quit, the brain cells come out of the insulation. I personally don't do it , but that is what he said. Just wanted to give you some info, it is up to you what you do with it.

I live in a dry county, so alcohol as well as marijuana is illegal here. They are both drugs....if they make one illegal, they should make the other. People will always take it in excess...
"Anyway, no drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we're looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn't test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power."
