I have worked out what I think is the answer to the given problem ... is it right? If not what is wrong? I DON'T want the answer I just want to know where I went wrong so I can find the answer myself!

Thanks,

Jennifer

Write an algebraic expression that describes the are of the frame. (Hint: The area of the frame is the area of the square that includes the painting and the frame - the area of the painting.) Frame is 1in. x 1in. x 1in. x 1in. the length and width of the painting in the frame is x by x.

(1 in^2 * x^2) - (x^2 * x^2)
1x^4 - x^4
1

Is this right?

Thanks in advance,

Jennifer

Steve's right, but you can simplify a bit:

(x+2) (x+2) - x^2 = x^2 +4x + 4 - x^2 or

4x + 4.

Ya know, if you factor to 4 (x + 1) you can draw a little picture that makes this make sense, four little rectangles, 1 wide and x+1 long, on the outside, offset.

That's not right.

If the painting is x by x or x^2
Then the painting plus the frame is (x+2)(x+2) which is an inch of frame on each side of the painting.

(x+2)(x+2) - x^2 = the area of the frame

Isn't it something that a whole generation of kids will pass high school, maybe go on to college and end up making more money than many of us all thanks to the internet and not their own hard work.

At least put the effort of cheating off your neighbor in class.

yeah you are correct but you dont have to make it so complicated your equation can be just y=x^2
