Get UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM).

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.

You need to leave the upgrading to a licensed technician. It is possible to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP, but it takes a lot of time and some replacements to the motherboard. Well it is almost like buying a new computer, but costs much lesser. Just give your computer to a technician and they will be the ones upgrade to Windows XP because some components need to be upgraded to in order for the computer to run Windows XP.

you probably shouldn't have tried uypgrading from win98se, the hardware on that computer will be nowhere near enough to support the newer operating systems. Linux or other OSs like that would be good though...

upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. I actually recommend Linux, but you can always go buy a copy or Windows Vista or XP.
