Our youth is corrupting Rap and Hip-hop! It used to be good. The old Run DMC and the Beastie Boys were the s**t.

I agree 100% with "trisha." No, I don't believe rap and hip hop are corrupting our youth. Parents always blame the "destruction of today's youth" on the new technology or the new fad of the time. Fifty years ago, it was rock & roll, then came TV and and violent movies, and now the new scapegoats: video games and rap music, neither of which are the sole cause of the corruption of our youth. Sure, a lot of rap (as opposed to hip hop, which is IMO, distinctly different from rap) isn't helping matters any, but those "Parental Advisory" labels are there for a reason. The problem is that the parents don't pay attention to them. All they know is that Little Johnny wants the latest 50 Cent album, so they get it for him without a second thought (or worse yet, they let him buy it himself). Then when Little Johnny goes on a gun-toting rampage, they blame it on the music he was listening to. That's just reeks of lazy parenting and lack of responsibility (personal, parental or otherwise).

I can't speak for anybody else here, but as for me, I can speak from personal experience. I've been listening to rap/hip hop music since I was a kid, and I turned out just fine (high school and college graduate, married, no kids out of wedlock and no rap sheet). The thing is, my parents actually made the effort to spend time with me and emphasize morals, as well as the difference between fantasy and reality. So nowadays, when a lot of parents don't want to discipline their kids for fear of their kid hating them or of going to jail, and/or they'd rather let TV, video games, music, etc. babysit their kids, it's no coincidence that the youth gets increasingly more corrupted.

p.s. - That being the case, I agree with "Captain Carla" too, since music (like many other forms of entertainment) is more or less just a reflection of society.

i love hip hop. but i have to say a lot of the music is just another source of temptation. If you listen to or observe anything thats negative and you are looking for a reason or scapegoat to act out upon, hip hop is the perfect culture for it.
anything goes, and the rappers are always trying to remind the teenagers that they are real, and whatever killing or drug dealing they did in their past was worth it , because of the dollar or survival.Music can be very persuasive. 0:

I don't think so. And I don't think movies or video games have anything to do with either.

I think the problem with our youth is less parental attention. Whether the parent is busy trying to make enough money to support their family, or strung out on drugs and neglectful, or whatever the situation may be, I think we are 1) setting bad examples for our children and 2) not paying as much attention as we think we are.

It's not Rap and Hip Hop but the artisit that are behind it. I do believe that it has gotten out of hand and that's because of the people behind the scenes that are paying artisit to make such crap. I think I'll make a song since it's so easy to do. How does "Stankin' Butt" sound?

It is definitely corrupting our youth. Children's minds are like sponges, and when television and the media lead children to believe people like 50 Cent and Jay-Z are role models, they thus take their music and messages seriously.
American girls are the most prime example I can come up with. They are dressing like complete trash and becoming more promiscuous. Have you ever seen teenage girls dance to rap? It's disgusting. Rap is leading females to become this way.
As for males, don't even get me started. They begin speaking in slang like their favorite rappers, even if they're white as can be from the suburbs. They dress like they're in a rap video, and almost everyone either thinks they're the next 50 Cent or Allen Iverson. Males become more infatuated with the "thug" lifestyle, and thus posess firearms and induce themselves with drugs and alcohol. And guess what, when they run out of money to support those habits that rap brought on, they resort to crime to pay for it. Why? When they were young some rap song made their minds believe it to be okay. Our society is on a downward spiral and rap/hip-hop is completely and utterly to blame. People who listen to it are less likely to be employed, less likely to have any form of education, and more likely to find themselves in prison. It is a talentless, artless form of expression with harmful effects on all of those who choose to listen to it.
