Call around to lawyers. You both can use the same one, and everything will be properly done.

If you can both agree on the division of money, property, and kids then you are in great shape. Non-contested divorce is the least painful. Just go to the county courthouse and fill-out the forms. Depending on where you live it will likely cost $200 to $600 for the forms, filings, and court costs.
If either of you get a lawyer involved, you will be looking at paying thousands. If it's non-contested, you don't need a lawyer.
You don't have to worry about it not being done correctly, the people at the courthouse will help you. They likely have the process outlined and documented. You are not the first people going through this process.

This is probably as simple as it gets. Just sit down together and work out the details on paper, get it notorized and petition the court for a simple dissolution of marriage. With nothing to divide you just appear in front of the judge and he will ask a few questions then grant it. Once its filed in the dept of public records, its final and youre totally free again.

Please look in your ocal phone book under attorneys-see if there are any that may offer a half hour free consultation. Basically, what you took into the marriage, you leave with, same for her. As for the children, that is where it is best to consult with an attorney. Marital assets, that you would need to divide in half I believe. Please be fair, especially when it comes to the children. Also, depending on whtat state you reside in, you may be required to take a For Kid's Sake Parenting Seminar-for a few hours on one day, separately of course. You would go one time, she another. Please, don't put children in the middle of your squabbles with your soon to be ex. Not now, not ever. They are a part of both of you. Property, aside from household items you each brought into the marriage to take back, please consult again, with an attorney. Take care.

Yes - your state will have laws you have to comply with.
You may check on annullment.
It sounds simple but you still have to follow what your state says.
You can have a paralegal firm fill out the papers and stuff but do get a consultation - some atty's do it for free. Even paying $100 is a good deal to protect yourself and do it right.

If you both agree, talk to a local lawyer and have him represent you both. It worked well for me.
It cost about $450.00
