373's are sweet behind a 4 speed auto. If you are living with a 4 speed stick 3.36 - 3.55's would be best. The automatics have an over driven fourth gear and that would drop the high gear RPM's to a sensible range.

Which would you prefer?

- A madman 0-60 or quarter mile but terrible fuel economy, a screaming revving engine at freeway speed (which limits your top speed) and an engine that doesn't last very long. Go with short gears (3.42, 3.73, 4.11)

- Good fuel economy, a well behaved quiet engine at freeway speed, a reliable engine, and less 0-60 speed. Go with tall gears (3.23 3.08 2.73)

If you don't have a 4-speed automatic tranny, GET ONE!!!!! Because the 700R4 has a very wide ratio between low and high gear. It has a shorter first gear than a TH350 (which lets you pick a taller rearend for the same final drive ratio) and of course it has overdrive. Which allows you to have the "best of both worlds" - a decent final drive ratio for the launch, and a nice calm overdrive for cruising.

i have a 93 ive done a little research. i have a 5.7L 3:23 gearing is great. For the smaller 5.0 i would go with a more agressive gear like a 3:73

a 3.55 gear is a good all around gear for a chevy, will give you good take off and will allow you to run 70 to 75 mph on the highway without too much strain on the engine, if you have an overdrive transmission you could even go with a 3.73 gear.
