When I use an up or down button on my TIVO remote, it goes more than up or down once. It also automatically goes thru fast forward when I hit the button only once. I can't get it to stop where I need. I don't know if my remote is bad or the machine.

Also make sure none of your other remotes has a stuck button on it. It could be interfering with your Tivo. You can buy an inexpensive All-for-one remote that has Tivo codes on it (read the package for compatibility) or buy a replacement Tivo remote from Tivo.com.

Based from my experience usually the remote button already old and dirty, need to clean up the circuit and button inside the remote. You can use contact cleaner for this.

Lets hope nothing is bad.
Unplug your Tivo from the wall for about five minutes. Plug it back in and let it power up. This takes several minutes. Now try it. I hope that took care of it for you.
