Life is short in one sense because there is never enough time to do all the things you want to do. Say you are graduating highschool, and you want to break a world track record, learn to fly 747's, and write a best-selling novel before you are 40. That's not impossible, but the time it takes to do all those things plus go to college, get a job, and work to earn a living means that you probably won't be able to.
That's why it's so important to use your time well. Once it's gone, you can never get it back.

The reason we say "Life is short," by my estimation, stems primarily from the points during our lives, usually milestones, at which we look back on our lives and think about where we've been, what we've done, and how far we have or have not come. As you age, it feels like those intervals between points get shorter and shorter, and you become more cognizant of the time remaining.
For instance, I will be turning 32 in June. I remember being in elementary school and thinking 13 and 16 year olds were ancient, but also that I couldn't get there fast enough because of all the cool things I could do and be. I made it to 13. Whoopee. No big. I got to 16. Getting my driver's license was great; I remember my first road trip - my grandparents freaked out about me driving 600 miles by myself. I remember being 16 and thinking I'd die before 21. Well, I made it to 21, and had a baby girl that year. Now, I'm graduating college and my daughter's 10. Holy $hit! seems like just yesterday I was cradling her newborn form, breastfeeding, changing diapers, and singing lullabies. We were reading board books about shapes and colors and talking about rainbows and puppies... she's pubescent now. She is becoming a young woman, and comes to me about academic and social concerns.
Yes, the rate at which time passes is constant, but, honestly, when we take stock of our lives, as we live them, it absolutely flies!
That's what it means to say "Life is short."
Use it wisely and appreciate the hell out of it.

The young always thing thus.
Each day may seem long. Looking a year ahead may seem an eternity. However, when looking back, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 years seem no longer than yesterday!
When then the inside man still remains young and he reaches his 80ties - his mirror, his body, his knowledge tells him that it's the end - or the end is near.
But, looking back, when he was 15 is only yesterday.

Do the math. You are going to be around for 70-80 years and the earth is 4.5 billion years old. The Universe is 15 billion years. So what percent of 4.5 billion is 80?
if you wish to make a mark on the world you don't have a moment to spare.

Look at it this way: If the Universe really is 15 billion years old, and the earth is 4-6 billion years old, then 50-100 (give or take 20-30) years is, well, pretty dinky...
Besides, it's never as long as most people would like it to be.

When looking back, no matter how old one is, it seems that life is short.
Looking forward to that same amount of time seems VERY long.

People that say this mean that's there always seems to be more to do than there is time to do it. Friends to see, places to visit, things to learn and do.
If you're bored you might try developing some hobbies. Something different from your normal routine, that challenges you physically and/or emotionally.

It is short if you compare it to times before Christ when people use to live 800,900,1000 yrs. We're lucky if we make it to 65 now adays. That's why it's important to take care of yourself.
