It is a good idea, however, the US has made a commitment to be above the third world countries that still use an "eye for an eye" system. Now don't get me wrong capital punishment is okay in my eyes, the world is better without some people, but the line is drawn somewhere, and a punishment of being raped, stoned, or tortured, is where first world ethics come into play.

Tooooo lenient is for sure. You sound like me talkin! If I had it my way there would be much stiffer punishments for all crimes. That Pyle[Arpeo?] fellow in Arizona does it right, where he keeps the prisoners for about 35 cents a day. He's my hero! Prison is a joke and not a deterrent! There should be no TV or computers or weight rooms or any luxuries!!!!!Prison should be as it was 100 years ago then the scumbags wouldn't want to be there again!I like the idea of paying the countries in the mid-east to house our more scummy prisoners. One more thing...there wouldn't be one child molester that would have to stand up to take a wiz...if you know what I mean!!

Instead of complaining about how "soft" our punishments are, why don't you put your money where your mouth is and actually learn WHY people commit crimes. If you understand WHY people become criminals its easier to learn how to prevent crime. People commit crimes for a variety of reasons...necessity, psychological abnormalities, lack of legitimate opportunities, etc.
Think of it this way: A kid hits his sister. He knew it was wrong to hit her but he did it anyway. He didn't think he would get caught but he did. He doesn't get punished for 4 days. Do you think this kid will learn anything? No he won't. Punishment needs to be immediate.
The same can be said for criminals. If a criminal doesn't get punished for months/years, they won't learn anything either. Think about this, since there are so many laws already our criminal justice system is clogged with petty criminals. The "real" criminals don't get punished for an eternity.
In a lot of ways, society has failed criminals. A lot of prison inmates are recidivists (or repeat offenders, for those of you talking out of your arses). More needs to be done in the line of rehabilitation. Inmates need to be prepared for the world outside of prison. Education them, give them life skills, teach them a trade so they can get a legitimate job, provide any treatment they may need.

Our laws are the toughest in the world. But there is no connection between the toughness of laws and crime prevention. Even if you immediately killed everyone who is ever arrested -- there would still be criminals, including serial killers.
What you conservative idiots don't understand is that cruelty towards individuals lowers moral standards of society and that, in turn, cause the crime rates to go up.
Forget about tough laws. We need PREVENTION.

Absolutely! We need to get through the appeals process faster so those on death row can be executed and the prisons should be made self sufficient and grow their own food so the taxpayers aren't stuck with the burden of feeding them.
