The problem may be that your cablemodem is stuck expecting the MAC address of your laptop. To get it "unstuck", you may have to turn off the cablemodem for as long as 5 minutes to allow it to "forget". Then power off the desktop, hook it to the cablemodem, plug-in the cablemodem after the 5 minute wait and let all the lights come on. After all the lights have come on on the modem, then turn-on the desktop.

This will make it so that your cablemodem is now "stuck" on the MAC address of your desktop computer. In order to use the laptop again, you'll have to go through the same power-off for 5 minutes sequence again, but this time with the laptop.

To get around having to power off your cablemodem for 5 minutes every time you want to switch computers, you can buy a cable/dsl router which will let you share the internet connection continuously without having to turn anything off and on.

Good Luck,
