google the flying tiger fighter squadron. they were american mercenaries fighting in china for the chinese before the us got into the war. look for the puppet govenrment thrown up by the japanese in manchuria, the north-east corner of china, by the koreas. those are good starting points.

china was invaded by japan in manchuria
and from manchuria, the japanese pushed more westward and eventually took beijing
this was around 1937 or something
and when the americans declared war on the japanese, they allied with them
