I've always liked this quote from Billie Joe Armstrong:

bluntly its just a music genre thats from the 70's.There's no true definition in my opinion because there are a lot of sub genres and styles that go along with punk. Stereotypically people may think of punks as poor,anarchists, and violent or people that want to be away from mainstream...I think it was also against all of the peace loving hippie crap and that's why they dressed in tight clothes and had little color compared to the hippies.I'm just rambling yes i know.So yeah basically to me punk WAS just a good genre of music to listen to but its whatever you make it.hopefully you dont make it into that greenday bull sh*t. Good punk music hardly exsists today and alot of these new punk bands suck.
