I haven't, but I've heard as well that surgery can actually make the person feel worse. It's typically used as a last resort after physical therapy which can include water/aquatics therapy that was quite helpful, some try acuppresure (not supposed to be as painful as sounds), perhaps chiropractic treatment (by word of mouth or dr's referral).

In addition to therapy which also included getting gentle stretching and strengthening exercises, I started taking glucosamine and chondroiton capsules. It's not a cure-all, but I do notice a difference in my pain level while taking them. They are supposed to build up in the body so they say that it may take a couple weeks or so. **Please do check with your dr before taking anything like that though. Hoping that you get some relief and feel better soon.

If you absolutely have to get the surgery as per a neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon due to your not being able to get out of bed or have urinary or bowel incontinence or such, please do get second and third opinions and also go to doctor that is recommended by previous patients. Perhaps you can go to a support group for those with chronic pain in the meantime and even talk with the group leader and find out some info (if anything about who Not to go to :) Feel better soon.

You should check this Sciatica Natural Treatment
http://cure-sciatica.info

Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica. Try a reputable chiropractor ASAP!

My mother did about maybe 5 years ago. It really hasn't seemed to help her at all. She almost always feels pain and on some days she's in some killer pain. I feel bad for her. They say that if you can avoid it try to at all costs because it may help a little but it isn't a perfect outcome.

GOOD LUCK!
