There is no reason for you to have an internal exam. It's just a way that doctors try to "manage" your pregnacy and labor.

Cervical checks are WORTHLESS unless you are in active labor. You can be dilated for WEEKS or you can be closed up tight as a bank vault and have a baby a few hours later.

Unless you are deformed somehow or have out of control gestational diabetes, your body won't grow a baby that it can't birth.

Your Dr. will tell you to get undressed and you will have that little sheet thing ( it is so uncomfortable but over before you know it). You will then be asked to move down to the end of the table and place your feet in stirrups. With your knees bent, you will be asked to let your knees fall to each side allowing your legs to spread apart. ( This is the part where women feel embarrassed). The speculum is an instrument made of metal or plastic, and your Dr will stick that in up in you but very gently.. there is not any pain, it will just be cold and you may feel pressure, and uncomfortable just because you have some person down there doing things to ya!!! It really takes like 4 seconds and there is no pain at all and its all over before you know it!!!

if they're seeing if you're dilated, they'll be using theyre fingers (sounds gross, i know) and that can be uncomfortable for about 30sec. that's the only pelvic exam i can think of at 37 weeks, and i do have 3 children.

No, they ususally do not hurt. The doctor will put his/her fingers inside your vagina to be sure you are more than likely be able to have a vaginal birth. Just relax and think about holding that precious baby.
