You know those IQ tests with the squares where there are 8 filled squares of shapes and you have to select the missing piece, by going along with the pattern or something? What kind of intelligence is that testing?

It's called pattern recognition. It is usually implemented in the form of a matrix - 8 given elements and one missing. It requires you to figure out the logic behind the arrangement of the given elements and make out the one that completes the pattern. The fact that it does not require much wording (or none at all) makes it a good choice for intelligence tests that do not want to be culturally biased. A good example of such a test is Raven's Progressive Matrices.
