Goooood question! I'm voting that Smoltz will be the better end of the trade on this one.

They're both going to get you K's, with the advantage going to Smoltz. So that's pretty much a wash category. Their WHIP's are pretty much the same as well.

Zito is younger, true. Unless you're playing in a keeper league, though, it's not that much more important. Smoltz will probably wear down at the end of the season, true enough.

Zito is, however, playing in SF now. Not the best of ballparks for a lefty, especially against left-handed hitters. The distance from home to RF is only 309 ft, compared to the 330 he had in Oakland. Means that some of those "off-the-wall" hits before will translate to HR's, which will mean higher ERA and maybe less wins. Smoltz's home (Turner Field) has always been known as a pitcher's park, and he hasn't lost much on his arm, just don't bank on him towards the end of the season.

Also, Zito's run-support is a little on the lacking side. With Barry "I play when I want" Bonds making cameo appearances throughout the season, the Giants are looking at Rich Aurilia and Ray Durham for much needed scoring. Decent, but clean-up hitters they are not.

Ultimately, it's your choice. Hope that helps with your decision though.

Not for the guy with Smoltz. Braves will get Smoltz more wins than the Giants will Zito. Zito has a slightly better chance of health, but Smoltz will provide better stats across the board. As old a Smoltz is, he's still a workhorse, similar to Zito.

Anyone who says Zito is insane, unless it is a keeper league. For one year, I don't care, Smoltzie is gonna outshine Zito by a country mile this year. Guaranteed. Look at last year's numbers. Zito has been producing progressively worse numbers for 3 years running. As long as I am the one getting Smoltz, it's a no-brainer. And I played in 8 leagues last year (mostly private leagues, no Yahoo Public - too easy to win), winning 6, a 2nd and a 3rd. So listen to the "Zito, he's younger" garbage if you want. I wanna get those fools in my leagues so I can take their cash. No contest.

smoltz is not overrated, hardly anyone talks about him and hes the bright lone shining star on all of the braves roster after maddux/glavine left of course. hardly anyone talks about him, but hes a very good pick in my eyes. hes also one of the fewest to have wins and saves. i would take smoltz over zito in a heart beat, while zito may be fruitful under NL hitting as opposed to AL, smoltz is the better choice imo.

Smoltz will get you more wins and strikeouts with pretty much the same ERA and WHIP for both. I'd take Smoltz he is a proven veteran and the Braves always seem to win.

Yes, they're both overrated in my eyes, but Zito is younger and has more left in his arm.

I'll toss another log on the fire.

Smoltz - he's got another year of domination in him and Oakland has a way of wearing those guys out before they lose them.
