There have been weeks w/o a new Grey's episode. Heroes won't be on again until April 23. What is the deal? Why are they toying with us fans? How do these schedules work? Why are some shows continuing with new episodes and others in reruns already?

Most networks schedule new episodes to make sure they run in sweeps months - November, February, and May are the biggest ones. This is the ratings times that they use to set new advertising rates, so they want the highest ratings possible during those times. The rest of the new episodes run from the season premier, usually in Sept. or Oct., and in between those months. When 3/4 of a shows new episodes are used up in a short amount of time, there are a lot of weeks when they have to show repeats. When their show is up against a proven big ratings winner, like the Oscars or Superbowl, they will often schedule a repeat then. Once in a while a production problem will delay a new episode, but they are usually shot far enough in advance to avoid that.

Networks have started airing some shows' new episodes consecutively, like 24. It makes the show a lot easier to follow, and so far the fans seems very happy about it. The show Lost showed so many repeats between new episodes that many of the fans are "lost".

Prime Time is usually anything after 8. New Grey's on tomorrow and next week, that is either the finale or there is one more. I believe it's just 2-3 new episodes left.
